The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility closet, basement, or attic and moves conditioned air through the home. These two units are what a contractor brings in and sets in place.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, connecting them through an exterior wall. The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the home's temperature and tells the system when to run. An electrical disconnect box mounts near the outdoor unit and gives the system a dedicated shutoff point.
